Stephen Ross is a singer, teacher, arranger, conductor, songwriter, and composer residing in Louisville, Colorado.
Soon after moving to Colorado from Winnipeg, MB, Canada, Stephen got his start singing in the Colorado Children’s Chorale. In high school, Stephen was active in theater and choir, and promise as a young conductor, having directed the choir at graduation on the stage at Red Rocks Amphitheater.
Stephen attended the University of Colorado at Boulder in the fall of 1999 on a vocal performance scholarship. In working with world class mezzo-soprano Julie Simson, he was a finalist for the Anderson Scholarship Voice Competition in 2000 and 2001, and won the award in 2002. While at CU, Stephen founded the a cappella group BufferZone, and acted as music director and arranger throughout his tenure in the ensemble. Under the tutelage of Dr. Larry Kaptain and Dr. Leila Heil, Stephen received his Bachelor of Music Education with a Vocal Emphasis in 2003.
From 2003 through 2015, Stephen was the Choir Director (and eventual Fine Arts Department Co-Chairperson, and Visual & Performing Arts Academy Coordinator) at Skyline High School in Longmont, CO. As a high school choir director, Stephen directed five choirs and taught Voice Performance, Music Technology, and Beginning Guitar. His choirs received regular scores of “I - Superior” in multiple competition settings, and hundreds of students under his tutelage were accepted into The St. Vrain Valley Honor Choir, Colorado All-State Choir and Colorado All-State Jazz Choir. As a choral clinician, he has directed the Adams County 14 Choral Festival Mixed Choir in 2006, the Northern Colorado Honor Choir Men’s Choir in 2009, the Patriot League Honor Choir and the Jefferson County Women's Choir Festival in 2013, and was an adjudicator for the CHSAA Show Choir and Jazz Choir Festival, in 2007 and 2015. In the spring of 2008, Mr. Ross won the Outstanding Teacher Award for all of Skyline High School. In 2010 and 2014 he was elected by the student body of Skyline to deliver the commencement address at graduation.
Stephen is a member of the vocal band Face (www.facevocalband.com). Since joining Face, the group has released five albums, and won many awards including Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes champions and National Harmony Sweepstakes runners-up in 2005 and 2007, Best Band that Plays the ‘Burbs by the Yellow Scene in 2009, and the coveted Best Local Musicians from the Boulder Weekly in 2009, 2014, 2015, and 2016.
Face appeared on the series premier of NBC’s “The Sing Off” in December of 2009 where they (technically) tied for seventh place. Face has performed all over the country including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Fort Worth, Dallas, Detroit, San Diego, Minneapolis, Ogden (UT), Laramie (WY), Redmond (OR), and headlining performances in Las Vegas. In the fall of 2015, Face performed at the midwest American Choral Directors Association conference in Kansas City, and in the fall of 2016, Face made their second tour to Europe.
Stephen is also a highly sought after contemporary a cappella arranger, having completed arrangements for middle school, high school, college, amateur, and professional vocal groups around the world.
Outside of music, Stephen cherishes all the time he can get with his beautiful supportive wife and three kids.
